For QuaranTiny Concert #28, we present Mercy Calhoun, a Baltimore-based soprano and educator. She was recently seen as Mrs. Bennett and Charlotte in the staged premier of Pride and Prejudice by Kirke Mechem and as Lisa in The Queen of Spades with Peabody Opera. With Live Arts Maryland, Mercy has performed as a soloist in Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms and as an ensemble member in Camelot, A Grand Night for Singing and Kiss Me, Kate. She also maintains an active teaching studio of private and group teaching at the Bethany Music Center. Mercy sings Cole Porter's "Miss Otis Regrets" and Mozart's "Durch Zärtlichkeit Und Schmeicheln" from The Abduction from the Seraglio. Mercy talks about why she chose to record these pieces (with Noah Dion, piano) for QuaranTiny Concerts: "I love both of these pieces because of the brazen take-charge attitude these characters have. In "Miss Otis", I imagine myself as Miss Otis's long-suffering maid...... finally getting her revenge by getting the last word in on the story. Make sure you listen to the end for the punchline! Blonchen is about as feisty as it gets in this aria as she tries to teach a big oaf some manners. I feel as if we all need a bit of that can-do attitude these days!"
